what a bpm tapper does

A tap tempo tool measures the speed of a song from your taps. Hit the pad or the spacebar in time with the beat and the tempo in bpm appears after two taps, then sharpens as you keep going. Mistimed taps are filtered out automatically.

Useful for DJs matching records, producers setting a project tempo or delay times, and anyone who wants to know how fast a song is without uploading anything.

common questions

how many taps until the bpm is accurate?

Two taps give a first estimate and around eight give a stable one. The tool filters your taps with a median, so one late or doubled tap does not throw the number off.

should I tap every beat or every bar?

Tap every beat, the steady pulse you would nod along to. If the result comes out half or double what you expect, the song probably has a halftime feel, so just double or halve the number.

can I use the keyboard instead of clicking?

Yes, the spacebar taps too, and most people tap more steadily on a key than with a mouse.

why does it show a whole number?

Songs are made at whole tempos, so the big number is rounded and holds still instead of wobbling between 179 and 181 with every tap, the way a DAW's tap button does. The exact measured tempo is shown underneath to one decimal.
