pitching by resampling?
Turntable style: pitch and speed move together (ratio 0.7937), so the tempo follows the pitch. Modern pitch shifters keep the tempo.
the number you type into the pitch knob
Pick the key your sample is in and the key you want, and the transposer gives you the shortest move in semitones and cents, plus the long way round if you would rather go the other direction. Both keys play so you can hear the difference, and the cheat sheet says exactly what to set in FL Studio, Ableton, Logic and DJ software.
It also catches the two traps: pitch shifting keeps a minor sample minor, so it warns when you are asking for a mode change, and it points out relative keys, where B minor and D major share every note and no shift is needed at all. If you already know the number, type semitones or cents into the shift box and it tells you which key the sample lands in.
common questions
how many semitones from B minor to G minor?
Four semitones down, which is minus 400 cents, or eight up. Down is the closer move and keeps the sample warmer; up makes it brighter.
how do I transpose a sample in FL Studio?
In the sampler channel set the pitch knob in cents, minus 400 for four semitones down, after raising the channel's pitch range to at least four semitones. The same pitch knob lives in the audio clip's time stretching section.
does pitching a sample change its tempo?
Only if you pitch by resampling, like a turntable. Then a shift of four semitones down plays at 79.4% speed and a 140 BPM sample becomes 111 BPM; open 'pitching by resampling?' under the answer to see the ratio. Modern pitch shifters keep the tempo.
what does 432 versus 440 mean in cents?
About minus 32 cents, roughly a third of a semitone. Type minus 32 into the cents box and the tool shows the key stays the same: that is a fine tune, not a key change.
