share files over wifi between any devices
File Drop is an AirDrop alternative that works across iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux with nothing to install. Devices on the same network find each other through a tiny matchmaking service, then the file travels directly from one browser to the other over an encrypted peer to peer connection.
The receiver approves every transfer before it starts, the file is never uploaded or stored anywhere, and closing the tab leaves nothing behind. Select several devices and send to all of them at once, beam text and links, scan a QR code to open the page on your phone, and rename your device by tapping its name.
common questions
do my files go through a server?
No. A tiny matchmaking service only introduces the two browsers, then the file travels directly between your devices over an encrypted peer to peer connection. Nothing is stored anywhere.
why can't the other device see me?
Both devices need this page open and need to be on the same network. Guest and hotel wifi sometimes isolates devices from each other; if that happens, a phone hotspot shared by both devices works.
does it work between iphone and windows?
Yes. It runs in the browser, so any mix of iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux works, with nothing to install on either side.
